Butte, April 2.—Brother Cushingberry,
the zealous minister in charge of the A.
M. E. church, is indefatigable in his ef-
forts to build up a thriving congregation,
notwithstanding that he often finds the
work hard enough to discourage a man of
less courage and perseverance. His con-
gregation is perhaps the smallest of any
in the city, but, despite this, he has suc-
ceeded most admirably, and it is all due
to his knowledge of business affairs that
he has managed to build a church and
draw together a badly scattered flock
which now meets regularly for worship in
one of the most imposing edifices in the
state. Mr. Cushingberry fully realizes
that in these degenerate days a goodly
supply of money is necessary for the suc-
cessful spreading of the gospel, and he is
always planning to secure the wherewithal
to enable him to continue in the good
work. While he's doing this he is also
endeavoring to give the people something
for the money which they so generously
subscribe and which he so gratefully re-
ceives. Although he has already received
a great deal of money, much more is
needed to replenish the church's depleted
treasury. To raise this money Mr. Cush-
ingberry has in contemplation a novel en-
tertainment and one which will undoubt-
edly prove a great success, being nothing
less than a genuine, old-fashioned cake
walk. He has secured the services of
Ernest Hogan, the well known colored
comedian, and his Criterion quartette, who
will take part in the entertainment. Mr.
Hogan will manage the affair, and will
probably be one of the principal contest-
ants in the walk.
Already nearly every
member of the colored elite of the city
has consented to participate in the walk,
and the mere prospect of such an affair
has set all the colored people of the city in a
flutter of excitement. The walk will take
place at the opera
house some time dur-
ing the present month.
