The Governor of Illinois has prorogued the Copperhead Legislature of that State. His message dissolving the Legislature took that body by surprise, in the midst of a discussion of a Copperhead bill, and great excitement ensued. The constitution of that State gives the Governor this power in case of a disagreement between the two houses about the day of adjournment. In this case, the Senate passed a resolution to adjourn on a certain day, and the House resolved to adjourn on another day, whereupon the Governor adjourned both of them at once. The message proroguing the Legislature, says:

"And whereas, I fully believe that the interests of the State will be best subserved by a speedy adjournment, the past history of the Assembly holding out no reasonable hope of beneficial results to the citizens of the State or the army in the field, from its further continuance, &c."
