New York, July 18.—Advices by the Fulton state that the result of Gen. Gilmore's operations up to the morning of the 14th, are that he has possession of all the batteries on Morris island, save Fort Wagner. It is reported that our iron clads have made a breach in the south wall of Fort Sumter. On the 13th, one hundred and thirteen wounded rebels were brought to Folly island. Many of them were forced into the rebel service, and said they intended to take the oath of allegiance. They are Germans and will be sent north.
New York, July 19.—We have the following particulars concerning the attack upon Charleston. During the operations a rebel steamer attempted to land reinforcements on Morris island, and was driven off and destroyed by our gunboats, and the troops barely escaped. It is reported also that a rebel gunboat venturing too near our vessels, was captured. Our losses in the capture of the Morris island batteries and the attempt on Fort Wagner, foot up:—7th Connecticut 109, a large number of whom are missing; 3d New Hampshire, 3 killed, 21 wounded; 76th Pennsylvania, 149 killed, wounded and missing; 7th New Hampshire, 5 wounded; 6th Connecticut, 1 killed, 11 wounded; 45th New York, 4 killed, 23 wounded; 62d Ohio, 1 wounded; 9th Maine, 3 killed, 35 wounded and 20 missing. Among the wounded was Lieut. Col. Bedell, of the 3d New Hampshire, slight; Lieut. Col. Rodman, 7th Connecticut, severely in side and leg; Major Hicks, 7th Pennsylvania, severely; Captains Chamberlain, Burdick and Tourtelotte, and Lieutenants Wilson, Jordan and Phillips, of the 7th Connecticut, are among the missing. Gen. Terry's division was on James' island, opposite the village of Legareville, accompanied by the Pawnee and McDonough, and the monitor Nantucket. The charge of the 7th Connecticut on Fort Wagner, is spoken of very highly. Every one of them was a hero. The failure of their supports alone prevented its being held.
