SACRAMENTO, NOV. 20. (UP)—The California youth authority has submitted to the finance department a request to spend $5,312,469 for control of juvenile delinquency in the state during the two years beginning July 1, an increase of nearly 50 per cent over the amount the agency is spending in the present two years.
Karl Holton, director of the authority, explained that the agency's program has been expanded rapidly since August of 1943 when it was given full jurisdiction over youthful offenders committed for state offenses.
One new school each for boys and girls has been established, he emphasized, as well as four new camps for boys. An additional camp for boys, at a site to be chosen, is scheduled to be set up during the coming two years, he said.
Holton also disclosed that the standard payment of $50 a month for youths working in camps established at Stockton ordnance depot and Benicia arsenal.
Previously youths have been paid the prevailing wage, with expenses deducted.
The authority expects to spend a total of $6,718,584 during the two year period, Holton said, but will receive nearly $1,500,000 from army contracts.
