Full Text

To the AUTHOR of the Verses intitled.

ADVICE to a Young LADY lately Married.

Madam,

Take the Liberty to address you these few Lines to commend in the first Place the excellent Rules you have laid down for a Wife: this being a Tribute which cannot be denied you; and then, Madam, humbly to request you (at your next leisure Hour) by giving Gentlemen a Set of Maxims and Rules for their Conduct, in order to make them better Husbands than they generally are.

It is evident from the History of all Ages and Nations, that the Conduct of the Fair Sex never was much exclaimed against, till the Morals of the other Sex were excessively depraved. In our Days both Sides do certainly stand in Need of the best and most serious Advice; and to begin with the Men, is beginning at the right End. If Honour and Generosity, Tenderness tempered with Resolution, Frugality and Industry, and such other Virtues as dignify Human Nature, and contribute to the Happiness of Society, could once be brought into Fashion among them, I dare say we should hear of very few Complaints against the Ladies.
