Little Marie Claire can't walk because she has no legs. She was born that way.
The child is a ward of the Province of Quebec Society for Crippled Children, and has been looked after by the society and the provincial government.
Both the society and the government are taking an interest in the youngster and they have been told by medical authorities that in three years time an operation may be possible.
With the aid of artificial limbs and braces little Marie Claire may then be able to start to learn the art of walking just like any normal person.
Until that time Marie has gone to live with a family whose six-year-old daughter, Guilberte Leblanc, is also a cripple. Young Guilberte is delighted with the addition to the family.
Guilberte Leblanc has acted as mascot of the Crippled Children's Tag Day for several years. One of her regular customers is the mayor of Montreal, who, she says, is "one of my best friends." Guilberte also met Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip during their tour of Canada last year.
"I liked her very much. She was awfully nice to me," she says.
