He told us about the State House. The Medill administration estimated the cost of a fence around the ten acre State House Square at a fraction less than $77,000. Mr. Platt, who had been appointed by him Commissioner of the State House, says that the fence will be finished for less than $35,000! Here is a reduction in one item of $42,000 The same administration estimated the grading of that ten acre lot at $73,500! Mr. Platt says he will have three sides finished this year for less than $4,000—another saving of $69,500!

The above foolish falsehoods are taken from the Journal's report of Chase's speech. The estimate for a fence around the State House Square was made by the Architect who yet carries on the work, a competent and honest man, or why do the Republicans continue to employ him? Besides the fence, it included the broad stone paving all around the outside. the curb-stone and gutters and the inside gutters: also four broad stone walks from the four entrance gates to the four entrances of the State House. None of these are included in the work which Mr. Platt says will be finished for $35,000. Therefore the reduction announced by Mr. Chase has no existence save in his mendacious invention.

The estimate for the grading of the ten-acre lot was also made by the Architect who is still employed by the Republicans. It included, however. the finishing and ornamenting of the grounds around the building in a style worthy of the structure. The planting of shrubs. the erection of fountains. the construction of gravel-walks, &c. The work now being done on three sides, which the Gov. says will be finished for $4,000, will leave the three sides in the admirable condition of a ploughed field. Moreover, to do that will cost just about double what Chase says; although by reason of the fact, that the State is digging a canal basin at Columbus, the dirt is obtained at about 30 cents per yard, which otherwise could not have been got for less than 70. This basin was not contemplated when the Architect made the estimate Chase alluded to. Thus it is seen our dignified Governor attempted to palm off a falsehood to deceive the people.
