A TENEMENT IN FLAMES.

A Young Child Killed and Half a Dozen Other Persons Dying.

CHICAGO, July 29.—At 2.40 o'clock this morning fire was discovered in the bakery of Chris Heffern, at 3165 Archer avenue, a three story brick tenement and basement. For a time the fire smouldered, and nothing serious was thought of it. Shortly after 3 o'clock it was discovered that a number of people living in the building were either dead or dying from the effects of smoke and flames. The firemen and police hurried into the building, and soon began bearing out unconscious bodies until eleven people had been removed. Then it was found that Maria Trugo, aged 2 years, was dead. The list of the injured people is as follows: Nelson Trugo, Adele Trugo, Nelson Trugo, Jr., aged 12 years; Delia Trugo, aged 9 years; Lizzie Trugo, aged 14 years; Joseph Trugo, aged 10 years; Mr. Bonner, Mrs. Bonner, Philip Bonner, aged 7 years, and Annie Drew. Mrs. Trugo and Mrs. Bonner and three others will die. The fire started in Heffern's bake shop in the basement, and was caused by a pail of lard being upset. Heffern and his family occupied the second story, but they all escaped in safety. The unfortunate Trugo family lived on the floor above, in the rear, while the Bonners lived on the top floor. The four surviving Trugo children were badly suffocated. Their recovery is doubtful. Nelson Trugo attempted to lower his wife and 2 year old baby out of the second-story window, but the rope was too short, and the woman and child hung suspended in mid air surrounded by flames. Captain Cowan of Truck 8, seeing their powerless position, rushed up a ladder and attempted to rescue them, but a sudden outburst of smoke enveloped them, and the captain, woman and child fell in the flames below. Willing hands dragged them out, and the captain was found to be terribly burned about the face, hands and feet. He also inhaled a large quantity of hot air, and is thought to be fatally injured. The mother was so badly burned that she succumbed to her injuries a few minutes later.
