Rail Roads.—The importance of facilitating and expediting transportation by means of rail roads, and the practicability of constructing them, appear to be rapidly gaining converts in the west, as well as in the older and more highly improved parts of our country. A plan is said to be in contemplation for connecting the Tennessee and Mississippi river by a rail road from the head of the Muscle Shoals to Memphis. The Huntsville Advocate asserts that 'a single capitalist, a gentleman of extensive information on this as well as on other subjects, and having no interest in the Tennessee Valley, has professed his willingness to take stock to the amount of 100,000 dollars' in such a rail road. The project is a mighty one and its execution would reflect credit on western enterprise and public spirit.

We should like to see, however, a few plain turnpikes constructed in our most populous neighborhoods and some requisite facilities afforded for the transaction of our ordinary business, before we devote our minds to speculations about rail roads to run hundreds of miles through the wilderness. The latter might indeed with great propriety be done, but we ought not to leave the other undone. Nashville Banner.
