The proposed sale of the Gary Heat, Light and Water
company to the Insull interest augurs well to give
Gary an efficient power organization, long experienced
in serving communities in this section of the country.
The Insull interests at present supply power and light
to a majority of the towns and cities of Northern Indiana.
Many other cities in Wisconsin, Illinois and Ohio get their
power and light from the same utility. Long years of ex-
perience, backed by a big organization of workers, is as-
surance of efficient power and light service.
The Gary Heat, Light and Water company has been
managed exceedingly well by its present owners the
United States Steel corporation, but the peak of its ability
to give service has been reached. When a subsidiary of a
great corporation grows to big proportions, it is difficult to
maintain it.
Two definite developments may result from the
change of ownership. (1) It will give consumers of gas,
light and power lower rates and (2) it will bring about a
change of the present electrical current from 25 cycles to
60 cycles. Both changes should be welcomed by every user
of electrical service.
Gary is one of three towns in the United States whose
electrical power is furnished in a current of 25 cycles. This
has made it difficult for small industries to operate here and
many of the country's largest industries have been dis-
couraged in their plans to establish factories here because
of the difficulty of securing standard power current.
The proposed sale should therefore be welcomed by
every public-spirited resident of the "Steel City" who
wishes to see Gary continue to develop and become one
of the chief industrial centers of the middle-west.
