THE CAMPAIGN.

Now that Congress has adjourned and the harvest season is drawing to a close, it is about time to run the mechanism of the political campaign at a full head of steam. It takes a long time and a great deal of hard work to grind even one idea into general consciousness. The States which hold their elections in September are wide awake, and so is Indiana, an "October State;" but in the country at large neither party is yet thoroughly aroused. It is nevertheless an incontestable fact that, as time goes on, the candidature of Tilden becomes weaker, its humbug more apparent; and Democratic defeat more probable.—Chicago Journal.
