Dr. W. T. Nelson becomes the first Negro in the YMCA to be elected to such a position. He has served on the Board for several years and holds the distinction of being the first Negro member of Metropolitan YMCA board. The Cincinnati Association and the Ninth Street Branch, especially, have been enriched by the thirty years of eminent service and leadership given by Dr. Nelson. He was one of the founders of the Ninth Street Association and served as the first Committee of Management chairman and has been a member of this committee continuously since 1910 when the present building was erected. Dr. Nelson has followed the YMCA movement across the nation for over a quarter of a century and his election to the vice presidency is another sign of the known list of firsts in the YMCA. He served on the first constitutional Committee when the National Council met in Cleveland in 1922. He has also served as member of the Ohio Area Board. He was for a number of years a member of the Executive Committee of the National Council and was Chairman of the Ohio Colored Work Committee until the work of that committee was completed. Dr. Nelson is still giving a great deal of his time and service to the YMCA. In addition to his service on the Metropolitan board he is a member of the Committee of Management, Chairman of the Finance and Program Committees and Historian of the Century Club in the Ninth Street Association. His associates are glad to see this community recognition of the unfailing and faithful service of Dr. Nelson.
