SAN FRANCISCO, Oct 12—Sgt. Gene Birdwell, 22, today awaited release from Letterman General Hospital so he can return to Kansas City, Mo., and spend a "second honeymoon" with his wife, Ann, 19, who married his uncle while he was a prisoner of the Japanese. She had been led to believe he was dead.
Although he was "too mixed up to think straight" when he heard the news at Manila, Birdwell said in an interview here, "I'm not sore at anyone; it wasn't anyone's fault and I'm very anxious to get home."
Mrs. Birdwell's marriage to Jack Marshall of Wichita, Kas., the uncle, was annulled after Birdwell was discovered alive.
Birdwell said his visit home on furlough will in reality be "our first honeymoon."
"We were married two years ago while I was on furlough and didn't have much time together."
