WASHINGTON, Oct. 20.—Assurances have been received by the Association Against the Prohibition Amendment from Richmond, Va., that when State Senator Harry Byrd is elected governor of Virginia he will take immediate steps to uniform state dry agents patrolling the public highways.
The uniform plan was advanced by the wet organization more than a year ago following reports from various parts of the nation of shootings of innocent persons by prohibition agents.
The Anti-prohibition body plans to campaign for the adoption of a national law requiring the uniforming of Federal dry agents when Congress convenes in December and the chance of securing the passage of such a bill is regarded as favorable.
"Senator Byrd has taken a courageous stand on this proposition," said Captain W. H. Stayton, founder and national chairman of the Association Against the Prohibition Amendment. "He realized the necessity of protecting innocent motorists on the public highways in his state, and faced the situation squarely. It was probably his stand on this particular matter that caused the Anti-Saloon League to bitterly oppose him for the Democratic nomination. The other states may well imitate him and uniform their dry agents that they may be distinguished from common hold-up men."
"It is hoped that the members of the national legislature who are not under the thumb of the Anti-Saloon League, will give this matter their serious consideration in December. It is one that requires immediate attention. The shooting of innocent motorists must stop."
