For a year or so past a company of Chinamen have been working Rube Thomas Flume, which runs from Grass Valley through the town, to the east of Auburn street. They have paid for the privilege, and made handsome profits out of their investment. Generally the members of that company have behaved themselves well, and have been polite to the families who occupy the houses close by where the flume runs. Three days since, however, one of the Chinamen at work there attempted to frighten Dr. Asay's little girl, and yesterday the same one threw some pebbles at Dr. Coombs' children and at some visitors. The children reported to the Doctor, who happened to be at home. He looked out of the back door and saw the Mongolian throw half a brick, which came within a fraction of striking the babe, aged fifteen months, on the head, from an elevation of about seven feet. Dr. Coombs seeing the act, rose from the table, jumped over the fence and struck the Chinaman over the head with a stick. The Celestial attempted to use his shovel, but was prevented by a "tail hold" which the Doctor had on him. The blow brought the blood, and the Chinaman decamped quickly. From the action of the Celestial it is supposed that he was drunk at the time, or that he is constantly insane.
