Interior Department Approves Application for 125,528 Acres in Utah
Washington, D. C. - According to information just received from officials of the interior department approximately 125,528 acres of land in Utah has been designated by the secretary of the interior as subject to entry under the stockraising homestead law. This law permits as much as 640 acres to be entered where the lands, in the opinion of the secretary of the interior are not susceptible of irrigation from any known source of water supply. The land must not contain merchantable timber and the surface must be chiefly valuable for grazing and raising of forage crops. The designation was made upon recommendation of the director of the geological survey.
These lands have been designated pursuant to petitions therefor by homestead applicants. None of the lands so it is stated, have been designated in this list unless a petition therefor had been filed.
The lands are, with the exception of about 1700 acres in the Vernal land district, all within the Salt Lake district. According to notice which has been forwarded to the Salt Lake City land office, the designation does not become effective until January 31, and no rights will be acquired, so it is said, by applicants filing applications prior to that date.
