"Madeira, July 3.--By the arrival of a sloop 3 days from Lisbon, we learn that the Court of Portugal had rejected the above treaty; that an English fleet of 14 sail of the line had arrived off Lisbon, the commander of which had sent in word that he had come to afford protection to the Portuguese; that hostilities had recommenced; that 20,000 French were within a few days march of Lisbon, and had taken several forts; and that the English residents were quitting the place, with their property, as fast as possible, momentarily expecting the French there. The inhabitants of Madeira are also in consternation, as their fate will depend upon the uncertain events in Portugal."
