Gen. S. F. Cary, as the head of the Order of the Sons of Temperance, invited Father Mathew to be president at the National Jubilee of the order in Cincinnati, on the 15th May prox. The following is the reply of that "Great Apostle of Temperance" just received:
Cork, 14th February, 1849.
My Dear Friend:—I feel highly honored by your much prized invitation to be present at the great National Jubilee of Teetotalers, announced to be held at Cincinnati, next May.— The prospect of meeting so many of the high-minded people of America, on that and previous occasions, is to me an additional inducement to hasten my departure for the U. States. Now that my health is, thank God! sufficiently re-established, to permit me without apprehension to undertake the voyage, I intend, with the divine blessing, to leave Ireland during the month of April; and after my arrival in New York, where I can determine on my future movements, I shall have again the pleasure of writing to you.
Grateful for the compliment conferred by inviting me to join this assemblage, and presenting my kindest remembrances to my friends in your city.
I am, dear Mr. Cary,
Yours devotedly.
THEOBALD MATHEW.
