"INDIA IS AT WORK, GANDHI THE INSPIRATION." SAYS RETURNING HINDU GRADUATE.

India is at work. Stories of Indian natives roaming the streets, each with his little snickersnee in hand, thirsting for British blood, are untrue according to Dhan Gopal Mukerji, a Brahmin and graduate of Leland Stanford university, recently returned from India.

Mukerji says that for the first time in 150 years, since the days of Warren Hastings, Clive and the British invasion, India is at work, inspired by the prophet Gandhi.

"If the United States had India's history behind it," says Mukerji, "it would have taken a 150 years rest, too."

"Gandhi has accomplished a spiritual revolution in India that has reached every man," continues the graduate. "No political revolution can compare with it. Gandhi himself is now in prison and has refused to see even his family. He has announced that the six years of his imprisonment are to be a time for communion with God. It is a great opportunity, he says, and he doesn't want to be disturbed.

"His followers made a survey of India this summer and the Indian national congress is now deciding on its future policy. I think they will probably refuse to pay taxes as civil disobedience and will contest elections in the British controlled legislatures. But all the leaders are emphasizing work, among them Gadu Mukherjee, leader of the violent party who is now organizing farmers' loan societies and conducting a campaign against malaria, two pursuits which would have been unheard of in India a few years ago."

Mukerji also said Gandhi had succeeded in breaking down the caste system in India. Gandhi is a Brahmin and of the highest caste.
