Construction Activities Moving On Many Fronts; Silas Mason Prediction Seems Right
GRAND COULEE DAM. Oct. 15. (Special)—Silas Mason Company has entered upon the construction of the $63,000,000 power dam here with a vengeance that indicates its prediction for completion of the low dam within 42 months will come true.
Following a brief period of reduced activity, during which time several hundred thousands of dollars worth of new contracts were awarded, the construction scene is one of greatest activity since President Roosevelt authorized the project a little more than a year ago.
Construction work is now scattered along an approximate 27 mile front from Odair, on the main line of the Northern Pacific railroad, down Grand Coulee to the power project. Eager to take advantage of the low water in the Columbia river at this time, many carpenters are engaged in the erection of two tall towers, necessary to first river construction work. All available power ferry boats on the project are being used to handle the traffic, one ferry being devoted to river transportation of heavy equipment and materials to the east side of the river.
On the east side of the river the Mason Company has already laid out and graded Mason City, where between 10,000 and 12,000 persons are scheduled to live. Sewer and water ditches are being dug, and countless trucks are hauling building materials for the erection of the 360 houses and other buildings.
All present work is being rushed before winter sets in. One office building has been erected at Mason City, and another started last week.
