Monday Morning, October 24, 1859.

The Lake Providence Herald, a Democratic paper, says: 'Our editor has always been a Democrat, of the Jeffersonian school,' to our certain knowledge. No matter, then, that he is anathematized at the terrific convention of Oregon—on which 'Rip Van' Know-Nothings in 'Independent American' ticket for the parish election, the Custom-House emigration got up by the Custom-House, and of the most obnoxious sort to genuine Democracy (rare as that article is in this latitude) are to be supported, triumphed, and generally lauded and promised.

We have been in public life a long time, and have learned to fraternize the interests of Senator Slidell. 'Gagman' make the country, obtain fat offices, and carry the State, with Old Line Democrats—all running: emigrations on the part of political schemers, but [in] Richmond many curious, strange and unnatural we never yet witnessed so curious, strange and unnatural combination as this. Elements, as antagonistic as oil and vinegar, are made to mingle at the mere behest of the great magician; and life-long enemies suddenly find themselves in loving companionship. So far, so well. Self-interest will sate even enemies, but whether the general people, living no interest of the kind, can be made parties to such incongruous and repulsive compact, remains to be seen. On this point we entertain grave doubts, and rather incline to the opinion that the Custom-House and its 'King' have made a mistake, and a destructive mistake at that.

With these preliminary observations we submit the remarks of the Lake Providence Herald, which appeared in its issue of the 15th instant:

[For the] striped partisans who are striving so patriotically [to support the ticket] gotten up of late in New Orleans by the different factions of the opposition, under the name of the 'Independent American Ticket' and is what a geologist would call a regular pudding stone, from the incongruous character of its elements. Its combination of [its] candidates is something wonderful, exceeding even the 'harmony of inharmoniousness' suggested of the near approach of the promised millennium. But think of such names as Chas. D. Dreux, (K.N.) for District Attorney, Ben Harrisson, (K.N.) [or Dutch and foreign born] for Assessor, and F.M. Crosat (Dem.) for Coroner, Peter and others of like political antagonisms for Judges of the different Courts! What a beautiful broth to be sure, with which to tickle the fancy [of] voters. Single, mingle-mingle while you may. Mingle black and white, blue spirits and gray.

We have heard it said by those who pretend to know the secret of this 'strange eventful' ticket. It was framed upon the 'you tickle me and I tickle you' principle. In other words, that it is to be supported by Mr. Slidell and his friends, with the understanding that such men are to be sent from New Orleans to the next Legislature whose business it will be to re-elect that gentleman to the United States Senate. Verily partisans are drifting out into the political seas, and it will be a difficult matter before long to classify either men or measures.
