WHEELING, W. VA., NOVEMBER 30, 1885.

The Presidency of the Senate,
As the election of a presiding officer of
the Senate is in the hands of Republican
Senators, Republican newspapers are ex-
pressing very freely their opinions on the
subject. Senator Edmunds is suggested
because of his long service in the Senate
and because he has been honored by his
party with temporary elevation to the
chair. Senator Sherman is urged because
he has ability and experience, and in
that position or in the presidential office
itself would command the confidence of
the country.

The drift of opinion, as reflected in Re-
publican newspapers, is for Senator Logan.
It is urged that he is the most recent nom-
inee of his party for the Presidency of the
Senate, having in view the possibilities of
succeeding to a higher place; that at the
polls this nomination was ratified by five
millions of voters, and that he has all the
qualifications of the place. Some account
is taken also of the fact that by reason of
the long dead-lock in the Illinois Legisla-
ture Senator Logan's re-election came so
late as to lose him his place on committees,
and that now, unless somebody steps
aside for him, he will have to go to the
foot of the class, like any other new-
comer-an apparent injustice which
would not occur in the event of his elec-
tion to the Senate Presidency.

It is also argued that in the event of the
death of the President of the United
States, General Logan would be no un-
worthy figure in that high station, as the
five millions thought who voted to make
him Vice-President. In a week's time we
shall see what Republican Senators think
of these several arguments as applied in
behalf of the Senators named.

Republican newspapers express opinions on the election of the Senate presiding officer, suggesting Senator Edmunds for his long service, Senator Sherman for his ability and experience, and favoring Senator Logan due to his recent Vice-Presidential nomination ratified by five million voters, his qualifications, and to avoid injustice from late re-election affecting his committee positions. In case of the President's death, Logan would be a worthy successor as Vice-President.
