Tribal Council To Distribute Beef To Reservation Needy

It is evident that some of the 1956 Christmas "spirit of giving" has been carried over into 1957 and is still being harbored in the hearts of the Blackfeet Tribal Business Council.

At an executive board meeting held January 15th, the Board members went on record as approving the purchase of 30 head of cattle from various sources and individuals, primarily for slaughter and distribution in the Browning, Heart Butte, Starr School, Old Agency, Babb and all other needy districts.

The committee appointed for purchasing, handling and distribution of the beef is Polite Pepion, tribal fieldman, and Donald Wetzel, tribal council member.

Funds for the purchase of the beef, approximately $3,100.00, represents the unused portion of the buffalo purchase made by the Blackfeet Tribal Council in November, 1956.

Due to the heavy relief load being carried by the County Welfare office, their funds are being fastly depleted. In November, 1956, the Council supplied Tribal funds in the amount of $35,000 to be used for relief purposes. Together with county funds, there was available for direct relief, $45,000.00 to some 500 individual families.

The Council recognized the immediate need for action if those persons needing direct relief and unable to get it, due to lack of funds, were to be assisted promptly.

Thus the Business Council has again come to the rescue of its tribal members.
