New Football Field Stands Up Excellently

Water Department Irrigates Sod;
Team Will Work Out There On Friday

City water department employees have flooded the new football field again and will keep the ground moist most of the time so that the grass will grow as thickly and as rapidly as possible. A careful inspection following the dedication and the first big game last Saturday discloses that the spikes of the contending teams did little damage to the grass.

The result of the tearing, fighting game on the field was about the same as the action of a harrow would have been. School authorities have been asked by the water department, which has charge of the city parks, to see that no students use the field while it is wet as the newly filled ground permits a person running over it to sink ankle deep when it is soaked with water.

The high school team will use the field on Friday for practice and arrangements have been made to cut off the irrigation water in time to permit the field to dry out nicely before Friday. Only one practice before each major game will be permitted on the new field this season as the grass must be preserved and permitted to get a good start.

Experts in charge of the field state that by next year the grass should be so thick and heavy that the practice can all be held there.

Two or three men were kept busy on Monday repairing the rock walls around the cinder track where meddling youngsters pulled out a few rocks and trampled away some of the soil during the excitement of the El Paso game or afterward. All agreed that the damage was slight and that everything considered, the arrangements for handling the crowd had worked out excellently.
