Attention Foreigners,
We cheerfully publish the following extract from a private letter addressed by Mr. Clemens to a citizen of Texas, a foreigner, an educated gentleman, and an American in and from principle:
HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA,
February 26, 1856.
But I have little to complain of in the present, except the folly of the politicians, who can't be satisfied to "let well enough alone;" for a miserable, corrupt, and personal purpose, the work of the great Clay must be undone, and the country thrown into a furor over the repeal of the Missouri Compromise. How it is to end God knows, but I have an abiding faith in the good sense, as well as the patriotism of the people, and I look to see the agitators overwhelmed with an amount of public odium, from which all recovery will be hopeless.
The fact that you are an "American" in politics, does not surprise me as much as you suppose; I have all along insisted that considerate, and conservative foreign-born citizens, have as much interest in establishing the doctrine that "Americans only shall rule America," as the natives. You have as much to dread from the wild notions imported by the new tide of immigrants as we have; and I have observed, that whenever I have found an Irishman who was not a Roman Catholic, the chances were even that he voted the American ticket. With the Germans it is different; they come in bands, they preserve their own language and customs, never get, by any accident, a sensible idea in their heads, and live on to the end of the chapter, as unfit for self-government as the wild horses of our western prairies.
JERE CLEMENS.

politicians foolishly seek to repeal the missouri compromise for corrupt purposes, but the writer trusts in the people's good sense to reject agitators. conservative foreign-born citizens should support 'americans only shall rule america' to counter disruptive immigrants, particularly germans who resist assimilation.
