NEW YORK - (INS) - We are not shilling for the old home town when we advise you that the weather usually is ideal in New York in October.
We are merely suggesting that if you plan to take in the world series on your vacation now is a good time to make hotel reservations For, unless there should be a terrific upset in both major leagues, all the dope indicates that the Yanks will meet the Dodgers in the big series.
Unfortunate but true Let's take a look at the record If the Yanks maintain their current pace they will wind up the season with 107 victories and should the Dodgers continue at their speed to date they would finish with 97
We are well aware that a lead can be quickly lost. The Pirates, if we recall correctly, once came into New York near the end of a season leading by seven games.
The Giants took five straight from them and the Dodgers finished them and good-bye pennant.
We won't bore you with a lot of statistics showing that if the Yanks won 107 the White Sox would have to win 51 of their remaining 64 to tie.
No. we'll let the mathematical wizards worry about the figures while we give an approving nod to Fresco Thompson, chief of the Dodger Minor League Chain, who sums up this way:
"The Yanks always manage to come up with the games they have to win. For a while it looked as if they were in a bad slump and they probably were, while the White Sox were creeping up on them.
"Then they go into Chicago for a big Sunday double-header with the White Sox If the Yanks lose they will be only two games in front
"So what happens? They knock off the Sox in both games and increase their lead to six games.
"The Sox don't seem to have enough pitching and they surely haven't the long ball hitters to match the Yanks
"Dodger pitching may have more spots than a leopard but they also can hit top speed when the chips are down. Some people say Dodger pitching is weak. But those same Dodger pitchers stopped the Cardinals cold in four straight games. And you can't tell me that fellows like Musial, Slaughter, Hemus. Schoendist and Jablonski are weak hitters.
"After all, Dodger pitching doesn't have to be as good as some others.
"Through Sunday the Dodgers had hit 115 home runs and five of the regulars-Cox. Furillo. Robinson. Snider and Campanella- are hitting from 307 to 333
"Maybe the Dodgers and Yanks won't win but I'd hate to bet against them."
