Ordinance Directed At Cumberland Telephone Co.
Owensboro, Ky., Jan 4. At a meeting of the City Council tonight an ordinance was passed on its first reading requiring the Cumberland Telephone and Telegraph Company to remove all of its poles and wires from the streets of the city of Owensboro. It is alleged that the company is operating without a franchise.
Recently the Council passed an ordinance requiring the Cumberland to reduce its rates to $1.50 a month for residence 'phones and $2.50 for the business houses, the same rate as charged by the Kentucky and Indiana Telephone Company.
The Cumberland people say they will be forced to charge five cents and ten cents for all messages in the county district outside the city, which heretofore has been free. A long legal battle is expected.
