PICKETS SHOUT VAINLY; MEN RESUME WORK
Militia on Guard as More Than Normal Force Enters Plant
GUARDSMEN SENT TO RUBBER PLANT
Non-strikers today marched back to their jobs under the protection of national guardsmen as the Republic Steel Corporation opened its big Ohio plants affected by the strike.
Pickets shouted vainly to workers who streamed through the gates. The company announced that more than a normal operating force had returned to work.
National guardsmen were sent into the Cleveland and Akron industrial centers last night as union leaders rallied their followers to stand firmly against the opening of the last big steel sector on the Ohio strike front.
A force of approximately 1,500 militiamen motored into the Cleveland area in preparation for back-to-work march by the non-strikers at three of the four big Republic Steel Corporation plants employing about 8,000 men.
Meanwhile, Adjt. Gen. Emil F. Marx announced at Camp Perry that 500 guardsmen had been sent to the Akron rubber manufacturing center upon order of Governor Martin L. Davey. The troops will preserve peace at the gates of the Goodrich Rubber Co., Marx said.
The announcement "amazed" officers of the powerful United Rubber Workers of America at Akron, who said they knew of no reason to expect trouble there since cancellation of a union plan to collect dues from workers at the Goodrich mill gates.
Company officials said they had not asked for troops but they had asked for protection, if necessary.
