Visitors Much Impressed with Scenic Beauty Canyon
Work in Irrigating Project
W. H. Harris, editor of the Greybull Standard accompanied by a party of prominent people of his city, visited Lovell and Powell, in an inspection of the Shoshone canyon and the big dam on Sunday of last week and is full of praise of the scenic beauty of the environs.
The current issue of the Standard says:
"One of the greatest pieces of engineering skill in the western country is to be seen at the Shoshone dam of the Shoshone Irrigation project, on the Shoshone river, about ten miles from Cody.
This wonderful project impounds water for the irrigation of thousands of acres of as fertile land as is in the United States.
Many hundreds of acres that were not under water last year will be developed this year, many ditches and laterals having been completed during the past season.
"The dam is well worthy a visit for any one who is interested in great engineering work and enjoys mountain scenery. The ride up the Shoshone canyon from Cody to the dam is through some of the grandest scenery in the United States. The canyon is narrow, the rushing Shoshone river has cut a channel through the solid rocks in places to the depth of 2,000 or 3,000 feet. The wagon road, which is also the road to the Yellowstone Park, is cut out of the solid rock. In many places it was necessary to tunnel through the rock to make a roadway. In places the roadway is hundreds of feet above the bed of the stream.
Last week the Standard man visited the dam, going out with a party from Lovell. Five cars went from Lovell and many went from Powell, Cody, and other places to visit the dam. The big project was built by the government. It was begun in 1905 and completed in 1910. The roadway was constructed by the government.
It is well worthy a visit and the trip can be made from Greybull to the dam and back easily in a day. The distance is about 65 miles from Greybull."
