Every day the war situation in Europe becomes more complex and more difficult to determine what the ultimate outcome will be.
With each rising sun, a new pact between two or more nations is advanced or signed, with Hitler and Stalin on one side and the great democracies of France and England on the other.
Encouraged by the possibility of a strong alliance with Russia, Hitler has reached the conclusion that he can force France and England to accept his peace proposals of allowing him to dominate Poland and to acquire colonies without "fighting it out".
In so many words, he told the Allies that he could lick them and with the aid of Russia and perhaps Italy, there is a rather definite possibility that he could do just that.
The democracies are flatly telling him to go jump in the Rhine, but so far they are not backing up their expressed "war until Hitlerism is defeated". Actually very little fighting has taken place on the French-German border.
Unquestionably the Allies are on a "spot". To fight it to a finish means a great sacrifice in resources and human lives and even then they might not win. To give in now would mean that the dictators would rule Europe henceforth.
Which course would be better for civilization of tomorrow? We know not. In our hearts we would like to see Hitlerism demolished and yet we would hate to see democracy destroyed by Hitlerism and war.
Most fervent of all, we want the United States to "stay out". That is the only way that we can really benefit civilization. And in order to "stay out" we hope that Congress will pass, without too much fuss and delay, the administration's neutrality law.
If they will come and get it and pay cash why shouldn't we sell nations at war with each other? That is the most neutral of any expressed neutral stand and at the same time, it promotes American business.
What European nations should do is a baffling problem, but what America should do, is an obviously clear role: be prepared, sell all nations and stay out of all of their wars!
