Full Text
On Mr. PITT's Resignation.
BRITAIN, by conquering Gallia (conq'rd:
Abash'd her bleeding Honour mourn'd
Minorca lost (her courage fled)
In dust she bid her prostrate head,
Till PITT arose, the wise, the brave,
Ordain'd the sinking Land to save:
The Minister's and Patriot's name,
Rare Union! lifts to Heav'n his Fame.
His Hand our ravish'd Palms retrieves,
In ev'ry Clime our Glory lives:
Where'er the Sons of France are found,
Our Armies with Success are crown'd.
But, Britain, rose thy Sun so soon,
From Darkness to the brightest Noon,
Again obscur'd in sudden Night,
To lose in Earth-born Mists its Light.
Thus Europe freed, and France subdu'd.
(Repaid with English Gratitude)
CHURCHILL in midst of Conquest fell
The rest our Enemies can tell.
