NOB HILL SENSATION.
A White Boy Run Down By a Chinese Knife in Hand.
Yesterday afternoon a Chinaman was sawing some wood for a family on Nob Hill. A gang of rude boys gathered about him outside the fence and tormented him by pelting him with rocks until they well nigh drove him to desperation. At last, being hit by one of the rocks thrown at him and hurt, he could stand it no longer. Whacking out a large butcher-knife, he jumped over the fence between himself and the boys, and selecting the largest one in the crowd, and the one that seemed to be the ring-leader in persecuting him, he ran after him as fast as he could go, the drawn knife in his hand and gleaming in the sunlight. As he flew down Sheridan Avenue in pursuit of his tormentor, a lady whose children were playing in the front yard, grabbed them and hustled them into the house. The Chinaman looked like a demon and she thought he was crazy. A drayman, who happened fortunately in the neighborhood at the time of the trouble, was yelled to by the lady. He left his horse and dray and went in pursuit of the pursuing Chinaman as fast as he could go. He did not overtake him in time to save the young hoodlum from a sound beating at the hands of the infuriated Celestial. The white boy would doubtless have been stabbed to death had the Chinaman caught him while his rage was at white heat, but he made such good use of his legs that the chase was a long one and, perhaps, gave the Chinaman's wrath a chance to subside. That the boy got a severe drubbing will excite no sympathy for him. In fact, he is much to be congratulated that he did not fare far worse. It does seem that there are some boys who will never get manly enough to leave inoffensive Chinamen alone until they have caused one or more of their number to be resolved into the original elements.
