LUCY LANEY GIRLS WIN REAL THRILLER

The Lucy Laney and Ballard-Hudson girls sent a capacity crowd into a state of pandemonium in their championship game that went down to the last playing second, with the Lucy Laney six squeezing by, 47-45.

Emma Burton, who shot the Augustans into the finals Friday night, came off the bench, handicapped by four personal fouls, and combined with Iola Turner to boost Lucy Laney to the photo-finish.

FINAL THREE MOMENTS PACKED WITH DRAMA

All of the drama and excitement were squeezed in the hectic and action-packed final three minutes.

After these two championship caliber teams had struggled through a nip-and-tuck, see-saw, three quarters.

At the three-quarter-mark, Ballard-Hudson, suffering from the loss of the guns of Carolyn Scott, had overcome Lucy Laney's 36-35 third quarter margin, through the dead-eye accuracy of Elizabeth Greene and Dorothy Carswell, was hanging on by one point (41-40) with 35 seconds left to play.

LEAD CHANGES TWICE

Within this remaining time the lead changed twice before Burton and Turner iced the game for Lucy Laney with a field goal and free charity toss respectively.

High scorer was Ballard-Hudson's Evelyn Green with 26 and Lucy Laney's Emma Burton hit for 23

HOWARD GIRLS WIN CONSOLATION GAME

Howard's sister combination, Annie Lois and Margaret Smith swished in 19 and 14 points respectively to help their mates sink the Athens sextette, 42-28 to nail down the tournament No. 3 spot.

After the Ram girls wiped out an early 6-2 Athens gap in the first quarter, they went ahead 10-9 and continued to lead, 20-15 at half-time. They never lost their lead.

Top scorer for Athens was Elizabeth King with 12.
