Another meet record was shattered during the finals of the twelfth annual Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships, held Saturday afternoon, at the Atlanta University Field.
Clayton Clark. Xavier sensation of Panama City, Panama who ripped off a 48-quarter during the trials, Friday afternoon, to erase a nine-year old mark set by George "Bubber" Mitchell of Morehouse. bettered his new record in capturing the 440-Yard Run in 47 seconds flat
XAVIER SHADES FLORIDA
IN WINNING 8TH CROWN
The Xavier University spikesters of New Orleans shaded the Florida A. and M. College Rattlers of Tallahassee by the slender margin of one-half point to cop their eighth conference championship.
Xavier piled up 38.5 points and Florida trailed with 38.0.
The other teams finished as follows: Morehouse 29; Morris Brown 25; Tuskegee 18; Fort Valley State 6; Alabama State 3; Benedict 3; Clark 3; Allen 1.5; and Alabama A. and M. 1. Also competing in the finals were Fisk, Lane, LeMoyne and South Carolina State.
MOREHOUSE RETAINS ONE
MILE RELAY LAURELS
The Morehouse Maroon Tigers retained the prized One Mile Relay laurels, with Johnnie Floyd, of Forestville. Conn., running a brilliant anchor. The crack Morehouse foursome of Worth Christler. Leonard Gainey. Blaine Gaffney and Floyd was clocked in 3:21.9. Xavier set the pace on the first three laps, then suddenly Floyd took the baton and ran a smart anchor to finish out in front.
Frederick Guy, Morehouse speedster from Little Rock, Ark., romped home in 9.6 to win the 100-Yard Dash. Clark, the smooth-striding Xavier star hit the tape in 20.9 to cop the 220-Yard Run. Elon Robinson, of Xavier, repeated in the Javelin Throw, topping the field with a fine toss of 187 Feet. 4 Inches.
CARROLL REPEATS
IN SPECIALTIES
John W. Carroll. Tuskegee's great distance runner from Annapolis, Md. repeated in his specialties, the One Mile and Two Mile runs. After winning the mile run with ease, Carroll was challenged on the first lap of the two mile event. Then when the pace - setter faded. Carroll again ran away from the field.
Sharing honors with Clark and Carroll as double winners was Manilus Hall, Florida's versatile field star from Cleveland, Ohio, who repeated in the Shot Put and annexed the Discus Throw. Cleveland Williams, of Xavier also repeated in the 880-Yard Run. Last year, the Xavier cinderman set a new record in this event. George Connor, another "Gold Rush" luminary duplicated his 1948 feat in winning the High Hurdles.
Other individual winners included: Robert Stephens (Florida) Low Hurdles: Willie Whilhite (Tuskegee) Pole Vault: Frank Thomas (Fort Valley State) High Jump; and Edward Tolliver (Morris Brown) Running Broad Jump.
