Officials To Meet On Communicable Diseases
More than 60 authorities on virus encephalitis will gather in Montgomery, Alabama Monday and Tuesday for the fourth annual conference on encephalitis sponsored by the Communicable Disease Center (CDC), Public Health Service, Federal Security Agency.
Dr. Morris Schaeffer, host to the meeting and Chief of the CDC Virus and Rickettsia Laboratory located at Montgomery, said that the conference will attract virtually all of the nation's leading experts on encephalitis, a complicated group of diseases often resembling poliomyelitis. Scientific sessions will be held at Gunter Air Force Base, adjoining the virus laboratory.
Dr. Justin M. Andrews, of Atlanta, Officer in Charge of the CDC, will be conference chairman. Session chairmen will be Dr. R. E. Dyer, Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta; Dr. Karl Habel, National Institutes of Health, Public Health Service, Bethesda, Md.; Dr. Albert B. Sabin, Children's Hospital Research Foundation and the University of Cincinnati, Ohio; and Dr. K. F. Meyer, Hooper Foundation, University of California School of Medicine, San Francisco.
Papers will be presented by the following: Dr. William McD. Hammon, University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health; Dr. Dorothy G. Smith and Dr. F. B. Gordon, Camp Detrick, Md; Dr. William C. Reeves and Dr. Ralph Bellamy, University of California and CDC Bakersfield, Calif.; Dr. R. R. Beaudette, Agricultural Experiment Station, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N. J.; Dr. Carl M. Eklund, National Institutes of Health, Hamilton, Mont.; Dr. Robert M. Chanock, University of Cincinnati; Dr. Dorland J. Davis, National Institute of Health. CDC personnel presenting papers include: Dr. Thomas A. Cockburn, Dr. Clarence A. Sooter, Dr. Preston Holden and Virgil I. Miles of the Kansas City Field Station, Kans.; and Earl H. Arnold, Dr. Roy W. Chamberlain and Dr. Robert E. Kissling of the virus laboratory, Montgomery.
