Apply the Pruning Knife.
The last session of Congress created the astonishing number of thirteen hundred and sixty-seven offices that never before had an existence and were never even heard of, and appropriated a million and a half dollars to pay those who were to fill them. Congress, which is about to meet, should put a stop to this multiplication of offices and should vigorously apply the pruning knife to the luxuriant growth of the official tree. It is safe to say that there was no need of the startling increase of offices, but the treasury was overflowing, places had to be provided for friends and the republican party strengthened by this addition of politicians. A democratic Congress must do better.
