Full Text

Marietta, June 27.—We are informed by Mr. Odell, a pilot from this place to tide, that on Thursday, the 8th inst. seven persons on a raft, in a very dangerous place in the river, called the Indian Steps, had run on a rock; they succeeded in getting off the one half, upon which the pilot went safe through the falls ; the six others continued endeavoring to get off the other half of the wreck, but night coming on, they had determined on going through the falls in a small boat, to a tavern about two miles below. They had scarcely left the rock, before the boat was upset by the rapidity and convulsed state of the water, and four (three white and one black man) out of the six, became victims to the raging element. On the Sunday following, as Mr. Odell was passing down in an ark, he discovered one of the bodies floating along side; two others had just been taken to shore, and the fourth, he was informed on his return home, had also been found.
