doubts of what he has done, or has no doubts of its Vileness, can never experience---The blind Followers of Faction may indeed, in the Height of Exultation, while the Trumpet of Discord is sounding the Alarm, perceive a momentary Flash of Joy kindle in their breast but it expires when the Voice of their Ringleaders is no more heard, leaving a melancholy Damp in its Room. The aspiring Demagogue, whose unprincipled Actions originate from a Thirst for Pre-eminence and popular Applause, who, if he could thereby gratify the Mob would root up Order and Distinction, unhinge the Portals of Government, trample on the Laws, and restore all Things to their pristine Level, may feel a gloomy Satisfaction while in the midst of his noisy Crew ;---but black Despair seizes hold of his Heart, when awful Conscience, in the silent Hour, arraigns him, and gives his Crimes a Name !---The latent Villain ; the undermining, whining, professing Wretch, who secretly glories in his Wickedness, while he enjoys the Profits of it ; who keeps his Conscience, at Bay, will sooner or later find that restless Monitor too strong for him, and will sink at the dreadful View when his broad Crimes are laid open before him ! He Alone who carefully investigates his Duty, and guides his Actions by his Sense of what he ought to do ;---He alone will experience that sweet Serenity, that gentle Joy, that Peace of Conscience which follows the virtuous Man through Life, supports him in Death, and attends him where his Actions are no longer denominated by the Multitude, but where their Intention and their Value will alone be, for ever, their unalterable and unerring Criterion.
