The Washington correspondent of the New Bedford Mercury talks in the following strain about the President the people have chosen:

Say what you will of old Zach. there can be no doubt that he is just the man to deal decisively with southern vaporings. The followers of Calhoun perfectly understand that when it comes to the point, General Taylor will act with quite as much vigor as General Jackson ever acted, : The President does not scruple to say that he will use force'if necessary to maintain the Union--he takes the ground that none of 'the States have the power to secede unless by the general consent of all the States expressed through a convention of the whole Union. He is not the man to shirk any of his duties, and, he will maintain the supremacy of the national government without flinching.
