YOUNG MAYER IS
ON WAY TO FRANCE

Iowa City, Oct. 13.—A message from
Edward Mayer, an aviator at the
Princeton school, informs his father,
Postmaster Max Mayer, of Iowa City,
that the young university of Iowa stu-
dent is aboard ship "with the Goddess
of Liberty only 100 feet ahead"—pre-
sumably meaning that he is about to
sail for France. It was understood a
week ago when he was suddenly sum-
moned back to New York, his leave of
absence cut short, that he was soon to
be sent overseas. In addition to this
honor the New York Herald has en-
gaged him to correspond for that jour-
nal, to any degree that censorship
rules may permit. The young Hawk-
eye aviator had considerable experi-
ence as a newspaper writer while at S.
U. I.
