For London "Haiti" Production
The possibility of a London production of "Haiti," the WPA Federal Theatre Project's current hit at Daly's Theatre, loomed large with the arrival from England last week of Mrs. Eslanda Robeson, wife of the internationally famous Negro actor and baritone.
Several hours after Mrs. Robeson debarked from the Ile de France, she attended a performance of "Haiti," and made reservations to see the drama every night last week.
Mrs. Robeson, who remained in New York ten days, stated that she was interested in "Haiti" as a vehicle for her husband. If produced there, she said, Paul Robeson will portray Christophe, the Black Napoleon.
The wife of the Negro star reported that the Federal Theatre's production of "Haiti" has created widespread interest in London and prompted her visit to New York.
Mrs. Robeson contacted William Du Bois, author of the play, and negotiated for a London production.
"Haiti" opened at Lafayette Theatre in Harlem March 2 and was moved to Daly's, 63rd Street east of Broadway, on July 11. More than 84,000 persons have seen the show. Rex Ingram plays the leading role in the Federal Theatre's production.
