FROM THE N. Y. EVENING POST.
We are authorized and requested to publish the following by a gentleman of respectability, whose name is at the service of any proper person on any proper application.
Extract of a letter from Richmond.
"I understand that Mr. Clinton has declined Gen. Scott's challenge, in a letter of ten pages, even more vulgar and abusive than that of Gen. Jackson, of which it is an imitation, and partially a copy indeed, as the ground occupied by the original was coextensive with Wapping and Billingsgate, it was impossible for Mr. C. to take that direction, without finding himself immersed in another's mire. and of there be, 'in the lowest deep a lower deep.' he has certainly, by a mighty and ponderous plunge, attained it."
Next Clinton div'd: slow circles dimpled o'er
The quaking mud, and clos'd and op'd no more.
"There let his 'drowned honor' forever remain."
