Full Text

The General Assembly adjourned last Saturday, after one of the most unprofitable sessions ever held in the State. They sat four weeks, and passed a few public acts of no great consequence; while several important measures proposed, were postponed indefinitely, or to the next session. Resolutions against the assumption of the debts of certain States by the General Government were laid on the table. An attempt to revive the license law of 1822, which was generally acceptable throughout the state, was opposed by the whigs and failed. A repeal of the law allowing certificate voters was resisted by the same party, although one of their own number,-the oldest and ablest member of the Assembly,-denounced the law as encouraging and covering fraud. Efforts made by leading democrats in the House, to limit the amount of debts of the Portsmouth Mining Company,- an incorporation of foreigners created at the late session,-to reduce the capital of that company from $500,000 to $200,000; to make the stockholders liable for debts above the amount of capital paid in; and to subject the charter to the usual control, reserved by the Legislature in such cases, were all opposed and frustrated by the whigs. Throughout the session they have shown great love for corporations, and but little regard for the interests of the people at large; having been particularly careful to pass no acts the operation of which might possibly have been against the party in the spring election.
