Full Text
"The protest of Georgia against the Tariff was presented to the Senate of the U. S. at the last session of Congress, and is preserved among the archives of that assembly. As yet no attempt has been made to repeal or modify the obnoxious laws imposing duties upon imports for the benefit of manufacturers. An effort at the approaching session of Congress, to reconcile the impost system of the Union, to justice and the Constitution, is anxiously looked for. That it will be at least partially successful, is confidently believed—the more confidently, as the experiment made under the last obnoxious law has not answered the wishes of its advocates. Although deeply injurious to us of the South, it has as yet poured no golden showers into the lap of those for whose benefit it was specially intended."
