The rush of draft-age youngsters to the local Army and Air Force recruiting office has subsided somewhat but not before Sgt. Winfield Pickett had packed off 40 men from this area to the Armed Forces.
The rush was so great, the recruiter said Friday, that the Air Force quota has been filled for the time being. Sergeant Pickett urged, however, that men desiring to enter the Air Force get on his waiting list since his quota is flexible and may allow for further enlistments before February. He asked that men wishing to join that branch pay him a visit so that he can get the necessary paper work out of the way to facilitate shipping them if quota restrictions loosen up.
The tide of enlistments began the day after Christmas, according to Sergeant Pickett, with most of the men going into the Air Force for the first two weeks. Then his quotas were reversed, with the emphasis put on Regular Army enlistments. Now Pickett is allowed to ship one Regular Army recruit a day, three aviation candidates every 11 days and two veterans a week.
Men with at least two years of college—the equivalent of 60 semester hours—may enlist outside the quotas, the recruiter pointed out. They must first furnish proof of their qualifications, though, and should give him at least two or three days prior notice so that vacancies can be found for them in the Third Army's quota.
