Full Text

A Temperance Colony.

Referring to the North Carolina settlement, founded by Dr. Clark Whittier, a writer in the Boston Advertiser says: "It is true that he has purchased a tract of land of some 60,000 acres (nearly 100 square miles) in the vicinity of Charleston, N. C., and, with an energy unusual for a man of his years, is devoting himself to its improvement. The town is to be called Whittier, and was recently organized and formally dedicated, with interesting ceremonies, to the cause of temperance and purity, all deeds of property containing a clause that, in case of any house on such property being used or leased for immoral purposes of any kind, the deed becomes forfeited and the property reverts back to Dr. Whittier or his heirs, etc. He does not profess to be the brother of the poet, but states that he believes his father bears some relation to him, possibly a first or second cousin."
