Special to The Laramie Republican
Washington, Dec. 9.-Legislation affecting the immense
withdrawals of
gas, coal,
phosphate and power-lands is not
very
encouraging.
There is still too wide a difference as
how this shall be done, and unless
someone is willing to make large concessions the chances are there will be
no legislation on this subject by this
Congress. Senator Warren and Representative Mondell both have bills
for the relief of the west from these
withdrawals, and also
bills
allowing
homestead entries on such lands, along
the same lines as the Mondell law allowing agricultural entry of coal lands.
It is hoped this legislation, at least,
will get through the present congress.
Insist On Government Ownership.
Ultra-conservationists, who are resent reserves of western lands, are perfectly willing to allow the present conditions to continue realizing that with every year
waiting the opposition will be more
willing to make greater concessions in
matter of federal control. These
ultra-conservationists are not satisfied with government ownership and government management. Westerners realize that it
will be impossible to get capital to invest in any business where the management is taken out of the hands of
owners and transferred to a Washington bureau.
