Full Text

EASTON, (PENN.) FEB. 28.

A Panther, measuring six feet in length, from the tip of the nose to the end of the tail, was killed about seventeen miles from this place, a few weeks since, by Mr. David Hower. About the hour of 10, the night previous, he was aroused from his slumbers by the cries of his dog; and rising, he went to the front door of his house to ascertain the cause. He judged rightly that the faithful animal had fallen a prey to some wild beast, and again retired to rest.

The next morning, having assembled some of his neighbors, they joined in pursuit. Not more than three hundred yards from the house, having crossed a gully, and accidentally looking back, he espied a panther crouched upon the half devoured carcass of his dog!—He fired, and killed it. It is conjectured that the great quantity of snow upon the mountains, had forced him to the plains in quest of food.
