To the Monitor.—A French paper, the Abeille de Orient, says of the Monitor:
We cannot comprehend the uneasiness which prevails both in England and in France with respect to the exploits of the Monitor. We regret to say that such uneasiness demonstrates how little the efforts of our seamen and the science of our shipwrights are appreciated by the public. What is a floating battery like the Monitor, with her small power and moderate speed, compared with our powerful iron-cased frigates? She is a misshapen attempt in presence of the most wonderful result of experience and science. The Monitor is a repetition of our old floating batteries used during the war in the Crimea. The iron-plated frigate is a happy imitation of our fast-sailing line-of-battle ships. To speak of the Monitor is to go back eight years.
