Full Text

Lexington, June 20, 1798.

A letter from a person well informed, in London, to his friend in America, says; "We ought to rally to our own standard, and unite as a band of brothers, and not rely on any European nation, who will promote our interest no farther than it suits their own views or advantage. The French have made up their minds, respecting the treatment they will give us, and our envoys will never be received. The French emissaries in this country, and some few patricidial Americans, have made an impression here, which our own conduct only can remove. They are made to believe, that they can as easily produce a 4th of September in Philadelphia, as they did in Paris: and an emissary who has lately returned to Paris, has, under the direction of the Directory, published his travels through every part of the United States; he says, that the French only want a footing on this continent, (Louisiana,) to determine the destiny of the United States."
